December 5, 2025 deputies responded to a 911 call to a Chiefland residence. The caller stated two individuals were found deceased inside. The caller went to the home to check on the well-being of the occupants having not heard from them in several days. Patrol Deputies arrived and located one male and one female deceased inside the home from what appeared to be gunshot wounds. Levy County Detectives and CSI responded to the scene to conduct the investigation.
The information obtained through on-scene interviews and evidence collection suggested that the caller who discovered the bodies contaminated the crime scene, immensely complicating the investigative efforts of Detectives and CSI. Detectives found two firearms had been used. Gunshot evidence initially suggested the deceased male, identified as home owner, Robert Lee Carter (7/26/67), shot and killed the female, then shot and killed himself. However, multiple gunshots wounds visible on Carter’s person coupled with two different calibers confused the scene.
Detectives determined the initial act of murder/suicide, Carter killing the female then himself, was an accurate summation. In anger, the individual who discovered this scene, Gavin Selfridge (12/5/2002) of Citrus Springs, used his own firearm and fired additional rounds into Carter’s remains. Having contaminated and altered the original crime scene as well as mutilating human remains, Selfridge was arrested and charged with tampering with evidence and abuse of human remains. His bond was set at $250,000.00.
The Levy County Sheriff’s Office extends our condolences to both families affected by this tragedy.
