Levy County Sheriff’s Detectives arrested John Whitehead (4/16/79) of Cedar Key yesterday for multiple counts of aggravated animal abuse. Whitehead became the suspect of this investigation after a report was received that his dog went missing under suspicious circumstances. The reporting person told detectives they questioned Whitehead about the dog and received varying stories, ultimately stating he killed it.
The investigation determined Whitehead inflicted great pain and suffering to the dog over the course of several months, taking his frustrations out on the animal due to a failed relationship. Whitehead detailed to detectives how he punished the animal for perceived bad behavior, which caused injuries for which he sought no veterinarian care. These injuries coupled with additional abuse led to the dogs’ death.
Whitehead was charged with five (5) counts of aggravated animal abuse and is being held on a 50,000.00 bond.
